The Center for Virtual and  Extended Reality in Medicine (ZvRM) at the University Medicine Essen (UME) is an interdisciplinary network dedicated to the application and research of extended reality (XR) in medicine. Our goal is to make the medicine of tomorrow more efficient, human-centered, and sustainably funded by establishing XR technology and applications in research, education, and patient care.

Our key areas of focus include education and training, medical applications, and applications for patients. By providing technological infrastructure and the necessary expertise, we establish XR technology and applications at the UME and offer consultation for future projects.

We identify new application possibilities, design solutions, and examine and realize them based on sound scientific principles. In order to stay user-centered, we closely collaborate with affected target groups and maintain exchange and cooperation with external partners in the healthcare sector, research, business, and industry.
