Patient-centered Application

ARUDIPA – AR-based Entertainment and Distraction for Isolated Patients with Uveal Melanoma

Uveal melanoma is a common intraocular tumor that can lead to severe consequences if left untreated. During brachytherapy, patients must remain in strict isolation, which can result in feelings of loneliness, powerlessness, stress, and boredom.

The ARUDIPA project aims to provide patients in this challenging situation with a self-determined, individualized entertainment offer. By using lightweight Augmented Reality (AR) video glasses in a sunglasses format, we aim to enable patients to withdraw from the hospital environment and improve their subjective well-being.

In contrast to conventional VR headsets, AR video glasses offer an open design and lower physical presence, which can strengthen patients’ sense of security and reduce reservations about complete isolation. Through intuitive control via smartphone, patients can easily access their favorite content and take a break from the hospital routine.

In the first step, we will investigate the feasibility of integrating such an offer into the clinical routine.

By combining XR technology and individualized entertainment, we want to contribute to improving the subjective well-being and reducing emotional distress of patients in the ophthalmology clinic.
